Scapular Punches are a warm-up or initial phase Strength exercise used to promote activity in the Serratus Anterior by promoting Scapulothoracic Joint - Protraction .
Starting Position:
Patient is standing in a “punching” stance with their back to an anchored band or cable
The Ipsilateral hand grasps the band/ cable handle and raises it until the arm is straightened in front of them
The exercise is then performed by performing a strict punch-like motion while the arm remains straight. This is achieved through Scapulothoracic Joint - Protraction against the resistance of the band.
The following exercises can be used as a regression if Scapular Punches exceed the capacity of the patient:
Active or Active-Resisted Scapulothoracic Joint - Protraction
Shoulder Elevation in any plane over 120º with GH Joint - External Rotation
The following exercises can be used as a progression:
Push-Up Plus - push-up variation with additional Scapulothoracic Joint - Protraction
Bottoms-Up Kettlebell Walk - isometric push/ stability exercise with or without perturbation
